This is a student flute, though I purchased it for my wife who has NOT played the flute since the 8th grade. With a beginner book and a lot of encouragement from me and the kids, she has really excelled in just a few short months.... the sound went from....well, let's be polite....not so great, to, by Christmas time, a nice solo of Silent Night, with my accompanying her on guitar, for her own Mom. Her Mom was really proud, and so was I. 15 minutes of practice each night, following a good book step by step, and not only did her memory of notes come back, but so has the tone. I don't know what she sounded like in the 8th grade, but she sounds great now. If she continues to grow and love it, perhaps when we have the money we will invest in a more expensive one, and save this for a child, but until then, this is a great bargain. The company shipped quickly and was very friendly. A good deal for the price.

I have read some negative reviews regarding Cecilio, but I have many flutes ranging in price from 200$ - to 400$ and my favorite insofar as tone and playability is the Cecilio! It may not be a YAMAHA, but who but a concert performer would need one?

This is a great flute, especially for students. I was surprised when the flute arrived as the quality was much better than I anticipated. The only problem, which has nothing to do with the flute itself, is the case that the flute comes in is too tight and seems that it could bend the keys so I bought a better case but everything else is fine.
